It’s for the purpose of widening the fame of Zaytouna University , and enhancing the branch of scientific research in it, that six new research units in the university have been developed. Four are concerned with the Higher Institute of the Origins of Religion, one is part of the higher institute of Islamic civilization and the other one is part of the Islamic studies centre of Kairouan. The latter is concerned with "the history of Kairouan".
This research unit was founded in 2001 and was headed by Dr.Salem Bouyahya, the actual head of Zaytouna University. Since 2004 the presidency has been held by Dr.Najem Eddin Elhantety, a professor in the Higher Institute of Islamic civilization.
